1 large loaf French bread, sliced into 1-1/2 inch slices
9 large eggs
3-1/2 cups milk
1 cup sugar, divided
1 T. vanilla
3 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
7 medium sized cooking apples, peeled and sliced
(Cortland or Macintosh)
3 T. butter

Directions:
Place bread slices in greased 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Bread will fit tight. Beat together eggs, 1/2 cup sugar, milk and vanilla. Pour half of mixture over bread. Place sliced apples on top of bread to cover. Pour remaining egg mixture evenly over apples. Mix remaining 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg together and sprinkle evenly over top of apples. Dot with butter. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Remove casserole from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Bake at 350ºF, uncovered, for 70 minutes. It will rise high and brown nicely. Remove from oven and allow to rest about 10 minutes before serving. Serve with heated syrup.
