1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 cups milk
1/2 cup butter, cubed
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. cloves
1/8 tsp, nutmeg
1/8 tsp. ginger
Pastry for 9 inch pie

Directions:

Line unpricked pastry with a double thickness of heavy duty foil. Fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake at 450ºF for 8 minutes. Remove foil and weights; bake 5 to 7 minutes longer or until light brown. Cool on wire rack. Reduce oven temperature to 375ºF. Meanwhile in large saucepan, combine sugar and cornstarch; stir in milk until smooth. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cook and stir 2 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla. Transfer to crust; combine spices and sprinkle on custard. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack; refrigerate until chilled. Note: An egg free custard pie. May also use a crumb crust such as graham cracker, gingersnap or vanilla wafer.
