"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Indian Fry Bread

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
4 cups flour
4 tsp baking powder
2 tsp sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 cup water
Vegetable Oil for Frying

Directions:
Directions:
Put flour in bowl and add dry ingredients. Mix well. Add milk and water and stir. Do not over-stir. Stir only until dough is moist. The dough should be a little wetter than a typical bread dough.

Fold dough up from the bottom and over itself a few times. Add additional flour if necessary but do not add extra water. Cover and let sit for 30 minutes or longer. When dough has risen a little, flour your hands lightly and break off pieces of dough. Stretch dough to desired thickness and make a small hole in the middle.

Pour vegetable oil to about 1" high in a fry pan. Heat oil to about 375 degrees. Place fry bread in oil and brown. When edges are brown, turn once. Remove and drain on paper towels. Do not stack until cool.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
When the kids are given a choice of projects at school, they always choose the most costly and time-consuming projects! Given the choice of writing an essay or preparing Indian Tacos for 30 students, they choose tacos! This time I was pleased with the assignment. (Unlike the physics project of making an easy chair out of cardboard.) The recipe is to die for!!! Don't skip the Fry Bread. It really makes it!
