1 pkg. dates, chopped
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, separated
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder

Glaze:
1 c. sugar
2 oranges, juiced
grated orange rind

Directions:
Directions:
Soak dates and nuts in buttermilk and baking soda. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg yolks, then flour and baking powder. Beat egg whites and fold into batter. Add date/nut mixture. Bake 1 hour at 350º. Mix glaze ingredients and pour over cake while cake is hot.
