Combine sugar, syrup, water and salt. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Boil gently to soft ball stage (240º). Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gradually pour one third of syrup over egg whites, beating constantly. Cook remaining syrup to light crack stage (265). Beat remaining syrup into candy mixture, continue beating. Beat until mixture almost holds its shape when dropped from spoon. Add vanilla, chips, peppermint and nuts. Mix until it holds its shape when dropped from tsp. This sets fast after chips have been added. Drop on greased cookie sheet swirl each piece with a spoon to a peak.
