Ingredients:
1 deep dish pie shell
2 cups sweet milk
1 cup sugar
¼ cup of SR flour
3 eggs
1 tsp of butter
dash of vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
PREP: Coat inside of pie shell with egg white and bake as directed.

In a sauce pan, heat milk and butter over medium heat to a slight boil. Stir the milk regularly to avoid burning. As the milk heats, mix 3 egg yolks, 1 egg white, 1 cup of sugar, a dash of vanilla and 1/4 cup of flour in a separate mixing bowl. After the milk heats, pour 1/3 of it into the mixing bowl with the egg mixture. Stir the mixture and pour into the sauce pan with the remaining milk. Continue to cook on medium heat until the mixture turns thick and will coat the back of a spoon. After the mixture is done, pour into a deep dish pie shell. Top off with meringue. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for approx. 15-20 minutes or until the meringue is slightly brown.

As best I can tell, this is a slightly modified recipe from Grandmother Rollins' favorite cookbook "Home Comfort Cookbook". It was copyrighted in 1938 and appears to have been received with the purchase of a new wood burning cookstove. The recipe was plainly called Custard Pie. The only difference was the custard pie called for a dash of nutmeg which Grandmother never used.
