CAKE
Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cool. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and melted chocolate and mix until blended. Sift flour with soda and salt. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk, beating after each addition until batter is smooth. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour batter into 3 (8 or 9") layer pans, lined on bottom with waxed paper. Bake in moderate oven (350º) for 35-40 minutes. Cool. Frost top and between layers with coconut-pecan frosting. Do not frost sides of cake.

FROSTING
Combine milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter and vanilla in saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 12 minutes, or until mixture thickens. Add pecans and coconut. Stir or beat until of spreading consistency. Makes enough to cover tops of 3 layers.
