¾ cup shortening) Cream shortening and sugar together
1 ½ cup sugar )
5 Tablespoons cocoa (make paste with a little warm water)
2 eggs (divide yolk and whites) Beat yolks in small bowl until light, add to other mixture. Add chocolate and then add:
1 ½ cup butter milk
2 ½ cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup nut meats

I have made this as 3 layers and used 1 & 1/2 the recipe

Beat egg whites – not too stiff, and fold in.
Bake in 2 -9 inch pans, buttered and sprinkled with flour
Bake 375 degrees for 25 minutes.

Serve with your favorite chocolate frosting.
