Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 c sugar
1/2 c light karo syrup
1/2 c water
dash of salt
3 drops red or green food coloring
4-6 drops oil of cinnamon or oil of wintergreen

Directions:
Directions:
Combine sugar, syrup, water and salt. Bring to a boil and cook to 300º (hard crack). Add food color & flavor; gently swirl mixture to blend. Pour into 8x8x2 metal pan. Let stand a few minutes til a film forms over top. Now mark candy in little puffs-each about 3/4" square. Because candy is cooler at edges, start marking from the outside and work toward center. Using a broad spatula press a line across the pan 3/4" from edges, being careful not to break through the film on surface. Repeat around other 3 sides of pan, intersecting to form squares (if lines do not hold their shape the candy is not cool enough). Continue marking lines to center while waiting for center to cool. Retrace previous lines until spatula may press to bottom of pan in all lines. Candy will be shaped in square puffs, cool and then break into pieces. People don’t make candy much these days, but these recipes are too precious to lose!
