2 eggs
1 cup shortening, margarine or butter (2 sticks)
1 cup white sugar
2 tblsps. buttermilk
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
Dash of mace or allspice
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. lemon extract or grated lemon rind
2 cups rolled oats
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup raisins or 1 1/2 raisins if not dates
1/2 cup chopped date
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Dissolve soda in buttermilk right before use. Sift together dry ingredients. Cream butter and sugar; add eggs and beat. Add milk and soda. Stir. Add extracts. Stir. Add flour and spices. Stir. Add oats, raisins, dates and nuts. Mix well. Let mixture stand 10-15 minutes. Drop by teaspoon about 1" apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 6-8 minutes in preheated oven to 375º. Remove from pan and cool on rack.
