Preheat oven to 350º.
Grease baking dish with butter.
Soak bread in milk.
Use milk in cooking.

1/2 Loaf French bread
1 Cup granulated sugar
1 Can condensed milk
3 Cups whole milk
1 Stick butter (or margarine)
2 Eggs
1/2 Cup raisins
1 Apple
2 Teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 Cup pecans (optional)

Vanilla Sauce

1/3 Cup butter
1 Cup granulated sugar
3 Egg yolks (slightly beaten)
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 Cup boiling water

Bread Pudding

In a bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, and mix well.
Break bread into small pieces and add to mixture.
Add condensed milk, milk used to soak bread, apples, raisins, and vanilla.
Pour into baking dish.
Arrange pecan halves on top in rows. Use a small spoon to push into mixture.
Bake until done.

Vanilla Sauce

In a saucepan, cream butter, sugar and slightly beaten egg yolks.
Add boiling water.
Cook over low heat until it thickens.
Remove from heat.
Add vanilla.
