6 ⅔ CUPS SIFTED CAKE FLOUR
1 CUP UNSALTED BUTTER
1 CUP SUGAR
1 TSP. CINNAMON
¼ TSP. CLOVES
¼ TSP. ALLSPICE
½ TSP. NUTMEG
¼ CUP ANISE SEED
2 EGGS, WELL BEATEN
¼ CUP LIGHT CORN SYRUP
½ CUP MOLASSES
⅓ CUP WATER
1 TSP. SODA

400º 2 COOKIE SHEETS

SIFT FLOUR. CREAM TOGETHER THE SUGAR AND BUTTER UNTIL FLUFFY. ADD ANISE SEED, SPICES AND EGGS. COMBINE SYRUP, MOLASSES AND ADD TO CREAMED MISTURE. MIX WELL WITH WHISK. WITH WOODEN SPOON, ADD FLOUR. CHILL UNTIL FIRM ENOUGH TO ROLL.
CUT OFF ABOUT A ½ CUP AT A TIME. ON A WELL FLOURED BOARD, ROLL INTO LONG SLENDER ROLL (ABOUT ½" IN DIAMETER SO IT LOOKS LIKE A SNAKE). CUT ROLLS INTO ½" PIECES. PLCE, CUT SIDE DOWN, ON GREASED BAKING SHEET. BAKE FOR 8 MINUTES OR UNTIL GOLDEN. THEY SHOULD BE AS LARGE AND BRAOWN AS HAZEL NUTS. DOUGH WILL KEEP SEVERAL WEEKS IN THE REFRIGERATOR OR BAKE THEM ALL AT ONCE AND STOR IN COVERED CONTAINER.
