4 cups white sugar
4 tbsp white syrup
1 cup milk
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp butter
nuts or coconut - if desired

Directions:
Directions:
Brown 1 cup of the sugar in iron skillet and use wooden spoon to stir while browning. Let sugar brown until a light golden color. If too dark, it will taste burned. Mix remaining sugar and milk and bring this to a boil. Add browned sugar to other a little at a time. Cook to soft ball stage. Add 1 tsp vanilla, 1 tbsp butter. Place in pan of water until cool, then beat.

Use wood spoon. Put exact amount of butter. Be sure and let candy set in cold water until cool. Cook in big sauce pan.
