1 (40 oz.) can yams, reserve 1 c. syrup
1/2 c. butter
1 c. white or brown sugar (packed)
1 c. syrup from can

Preheat oven to 350.

Place yams in a shallow baking dish.
Combine syrup from can, sugar and butter in saucepan; stirring to boil to thicken.
Pour sauce over yams.
Bake in 350 oven for 20-30 minutes, basting frequently.

Note: Vary the above recipe with these taste-temping garnishes:
1. Sprinkle lightly with ground cinnamon and/or nutmeg
2. Place a few slices from a whole orange on yams in dish and add 3 T. orange juice to liquid before basting.
3. Place a small sprinkling of crushed pineapple on yams in dish and add 3 T. pineapple juice to liquid before basting.
