1 cup sifted flour
tsp baking soda
⅛ tsp salt
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 cups rolled oats

Date Filling:
pound dates (stoned)
1 Tbsp brown sugar
cup water

Sift flour, baking soda, and salt rub or cut in butter. Add sugar and rolled oats and mix well.
Spread inch crumbs into greased pan, 8-inch square. Pat to make smooth cover evenly with cooled date filling and cover with remaining crumbs. Pat to smooth. Bake in slow oven (325F) for 30-40 minutes or until pale brown. Leave in pan until cool, then cut into squares.

Date Filling: Boil together the date filling ingredients until dates are soft enough to be mashed with a fork,
adding sufficient water to prevent scorching. The mixture should be of a jam-like consistency.
