Stir 1 c sugar over a hot burner till dark brown, Slowly add 1/2 c cold water, simmer 5 min. Cool (this must be the burnt sugar syrup)

2/3 c shortening
1 1/2 c sugar
3 eggs separated
1 c lukewarm water
2 1/2 c flour
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
5 tbsp burnt sugar syrup

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter & sugar, add egg yolks, then water and flour with B.P. alternately. Add syrup, vanilla, fold in beaten egg whites last. Bake in two nine inch layer pans.

FROSTING
1 c white sugar
1/2 c burnt sugar syrup
3/4 c cream

Boil to soft ball, beat til spreading consistency, and if it is too soft, add some powdered sugar
