1 cup chopped dates
1 cup boiling water
1 tsp soda
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp shortening

Directions:
Directions:
Combine dates, boiling water, and soda. Add remaining ingredients, mix well. Pour into greased and floured 8 square pan. Bake at 350 degrees until done. (Double recipe for 9 x 13 pan.)

Topping for Date Cake
1 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup water
Boil all ingredients for 20 minutes. Pour on top of hot cake. Let cool and serve.
