Fix Batter first.
Beat 1 egg in deep bowl until thick and lemon colored. Add 1 cup milk, 1 tbsp. vegetable oil and stir in sifted ingredients. Beat until smooth. Cover and set aside while preparing onions.
Fry - in electric skillet or heavy frying pan, add oil or shortening 1-1/2 to 2 inches deep. Ideal temp 375. Dip a few onion rings at a time in batter using long handled fork and let drain briefly before dropping into oil. Turn only once and do NOT crowd in skillet.
