2 c flour
1/3 c sugar
1 ½ tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
½ tsp. baking soda

6 Tbs. unsalted butter or margarine
½ buttermilk or sour milk
1 large egg
1 ½ tsp. vanilla
2/3 c. raisins optional

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400°. In a large bowl, stir together dry ingredients. Cut butter into ½ " cubes and distribute them over the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, stir together the buttermilk, egg and vanilla. Add buttermilk mixture and stir to combine. Stir in the raisins. With floured hands form dough into a ball. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Form into an 8" circle. Cut into 8 wedges with a serrated knife. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until lightly browned and a cake tester comes out clean. Remove from sheet and place on cooling rack for 5 minutes. Recut scones and serve warm.
