1 c. syrup or honey
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1 tbsp. anise seed
3 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Place syrup, sugar, water and anise in a saucepan and bring to a boil, then cool. When cool, stir in flour and baking soda.

Spread in a greased 9x13 pan and bake at 375ºF for 15-20 minutes. Watch carefully while it is baking because it can burn easily.

Oma used to make this cake for birthday parties when I was young. She would cut pieces of it and tie a string around them and hang them from the ceiling. All the kids had to race to see who could eat theirs fastest with their hands behind their back.
