2 pounds beef chuck, cubed
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic
1 medium onion, sliced
1 or 2 bay leaves
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp sugar
½ tsp paprika
¼ tsp ground pepper
Dash of allspice or cloves
6 carrots, pared & quartered
4 potatoes, pared and quartered
mushrooms can be added if desired

* In Dutch oven, thoroughly brown meat in 2 tbsp olive oil or shortening, turning often.
* Add 2 cups hot water and next 9 ingredients. Cover; simmer for 1½ hours, stirring occasionally.
* Remove bay leaves and garlic. Add vegetables and cover. Cook 30-45 mins until veggies are tender. * Remove meat and veggies from pan and place in bowl. Measure 1½ cups liquid from pan, combine with ¼ cup water and 2 tbsp flour and mix til smooth. Stir slowly back into hot liquid in pan. Cook, stirring until bubbly.
* Pour gravy over beef and vegetables in serving bowl.
