1 c. butter
1 egg
1.5 c. sugar
4 t. grated orange rind
2 T. light or dark corn syrup
3 c. flour
2 t. cinnamon
1 t. ginger
1/2 t. cloves
1/2 t. salt
2 t. baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar and add the egg. Beat until light and fluffy. Add the orange rind and corn syrup and mix well. Sift the dry ingredients and stir into the dough. Divine into 3-4 discs and wrap in plastic. Chill until easy to handle or overnight.

If dough is too stiff/cold to roll out, put into microwave for a few seconds. Roll about 1/4 inch thick on floured cloth and bake cut-outs at 375F for 8-10 minutes. They will puff up and then fall in the oven. The cookies do spread out a bit so give them some space on the pan.

I frost with traditional buttercream.

Personal Notes:
This recipe was handed out at a Christmas event called "Christmas Hand*In*Hand" that the First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, MI produced every 3 years. It was an amazing event including a trip through the markets of ancient holy lands, a visit with the wise men, story time with Mrs. Claus and cookie decorating (the women of the church make thousands of these ginger cookies for the event!), culminating with a walk through church grounds with live donkeys and sheep, etc. and then a visit to the manger where a live family portray the holy family! I took my girl scouts and cub scouts - wonderful memories!
