Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup shortening (Crisco)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
4 large eggs
3 cups flour
5 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. anise extract (can substitute lemon or vanilla extract)
Glaze:
3-4 tbsp. milk
2 cups confectionary sugar
1 tsp. anise extract (I'd use vanilla but I don't like anise)
nonpareils (sprinkles) if desired

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl; set aside. Melt butter and shortening together in a separate bowl. Beat the butter/shortening about two minutes until completely incorporated, then add granulated sugar and mix well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition, about 1 minute each. Add anise.
Add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture slowly, until fully incorporated. Don't overmix. If the dough is too sticky to roll in the palm of your hand, add more flour; the dough should remain soft so don't add too much.
Roll dough in small balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet(Grandma Garruto roll the dough into long ropes, cut each about 5-6 inches long and then laid them on the cookie sheet in an S shape). These will puff up so leave space between each cookie. Bake at 375º for 8-10 minutes (probably closer to 8). The bottoms should be lightly browned but the tops should remain light in color.
Remove cookies from sheet immediately and move to a wire rack. Cool completely before glazing.
For the glaze, slowly mix milk with powdered sugar and anise extract. The glaze needs to be thick to adhere to the cookie. Dip the top of each cookie into the glaze. If you want to sprinkle nonpareils on top of the icing, only dip about 10 cookies at a time. Leave to dry completely.
