1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed with the flat of a knife
1 oz butter
2 ¼ lbs potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
½ c light cream
Salt and pepper
6 oz Gruyere cheese, grated
3 oz butter, cut into small slices

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Rub bottom of baking dish with clove of garlic.
Grease bottom of pan with butter.

Spread half the potatoes in bottom, followed by half the cheese, salt and pepper and half dots of butter.
Top with remaining potatoes arranged neatly and finish with cheese, salt, pepper and butter. Pour cream into sides of the dish around potatoes.

Cook on top rack for 30-40 minutes, until potatoes are tender and top is evenly browned.
