Heat oven to 325 degrees. Rinse turkey inside and out with cold water; drain and pat dry. Spoon stuffing loosely into neck cavity. Fold wings, bringing behind shoulder joints. Spoon stuffing lightly into body cavity; do not pack. Push ends of legs under band of skin above the tail. Place turkey breast side up. Brush with soft butter. Roast turkey; baste occasionally with drippings.

8-12 lbs, 2 1/2 to 3 hours
12-16 lbs, 3 to 3 3/4 hours
16-20 lbs, 3 3/4 to 4 1/2 hours
20-24 lbs, 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours

This is the traditional Thanksgiving turkey that we have served since our first Thanksgiving as a family, and was the recipe I grew up with for decades. A favorite story we still laugh about is the day before Thanksgiving when Dad called me at work and I attempted to describe how to "fold wings behind the shoulder joints" over the phone. Not as easy as it sounds!
