Personal Notes:
When my cousin Linda Houns and I were teenagers in the 1960s, we looked forward to spending time during the summer at the home of Grandpa Archie and Grandma Maude Houns in Tomahawk.

Our favorite haunt was “The Hole”, a teen hangout behind McCarthy’s bar downtown. The jukebox music from that era still runs through my head: “Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen, (Everybody knew the lyrics were dirty, even though no one could figure out exactly what they were saying), "Wipe Out"(the drum solo was perfect for dancing the Shimmy), Mick Jagger singing “Satisfaction,” and of course all of the Beatles tunes. On a few occasions Salty and the Shakers, or some other local teenage band would perform live.

Many evenings, after walking home from The Hole, Linda and I would sit in the kitchen sharing gossip and laughs and helping ourselves to some of Grandma’s homemade doughnuts, which we sometimes slathered with homemade strawberry jam and washed down with Fresca.

In my mind, Grandma’s doughnuts and The Hole are forever linked. Unfortunately, the recipe no longer exists and I don’t know if Grandma ever wrote it down, but those summer evenings in her kitchen are etched in my memory forever.
