Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 c sugar
1/4 c butter or margarine
1/4 c boiling water
1 1/4 evaporated milk
1/2 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Carmelize 2/3 c sugar by heating in a heavy pan until it melts and browns. Stir only in the spots where sugar has begun to liquefy, continuing to increase the area of stirring as sugar melts. Be careful not to burn. Remove from burner, dump in remaining sugar and butter and stir. Add boiling water. Continue stirring until mixture is smooth (even if not smooth, don't worry-keep going). Add 1/3 cup milk, cook to 225 degrees (stirring constantly). Add remaining milk and cook to 225 degrees, again stirring constantly. Remove from heat; add vanilla. Stir well, store in closed jar.

Personal Notes:
Grandma Overdorf made this to pair with her wonderful angelfood cakes, and it was better than any bakery treat-a favorite for birthday celebrations.
