Directions:1. Preheat oven to 325° F. Grease the bottom of a 10 inch tube (or bundt) cake pan. 2. Sift together dry ingredients (flour through baking soda) and set aside. 3. Cream the butter, then add the sugar and cream until light. 4. Blend in eggs one at a time, beating after each egg. 5. Combine the buttermilk and vanilla. Add to batter alternately with dry ingredients. 6. Spoon batter into cake pan. 7. Bake for 60 – 65 minutes. 8. While cake is baking make the butter sauce. In a small pan, heat until the butter is melted – do not boil – and stir until sugar is dissolved. Add rum to taste or one tablespoon of vanilla or rum flavoring. 9. After removing from oven, but before it cools, run a spatula along the edge and center of the tube pan. Prick the surface of the cake with a fork and pour hot butter sauce over the cake. Cool thoroughly before removing from the pan. 10. Sprinkle cake with powdered sugar. |

Notes: Dave and I do not like traditional wedding cakes - too much frosting!. So we made and served this cake, which was my Great-aunt Bea's recipe. Heavy on the rum rather than frosting!
