31/2 cups all purpose flour
1/4 teas. salt
2 teas. baking soda
11/2 cups sugar
1 cup butter softened
1 large egg
1 teas.ground cinnamon
1 teas. ground cloves
1 teas. ground ginger
1/2 teas. ground anise
2 TBLS light or dark corn syrup
1 cup sliced almond slivers

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375º
In large mixing bowl beat sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add egg then spices and corn syrup blending well. At low speed add four one cup at a time until well mixed.
Divide dough into 8 sections and roll each section into a 14 inch rope. Slice into 1/4 inch slices. Place on ungreased cookie sheet about 3/4 inches apart. Bake about 8 minutes.

The original recipe says to cool the dough for at least an hour. I found this made the dough to hard to roll. We also have rolled the dough out like sugar cookies and cut them into strips so that they make a dunkable cookie like Grandpa wanted.
