"As viscous as motor oil swirled in a swamp, redolent of burnt bell peppers nested in by incontinent mice and a finish reminiscent of the dregs of a stale can of Coca-Cola that someone has been using as an ashtray. Not a bad drink, though."--Excerpt from "The Moose Turd Wine Tasting" by T. A. Nonymous

Mix everything together. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat. Simmer for 3 hours or so, stirring a lot during the first half-hour of cooking. Or prepare in a slow cooker on low for 6 to 8 hours.

Serve with some nice crusty bread and a big glass of iced tea, or as a side dish to N.C. Eastern-style barbecue (vinegar-based sauce), slaw, boiled potatoes and hush puppies.
