1 lb (500 g) lean ground beef
1 clove garlic minced
1 egg lightly beaten
1/4 c (50 ml) breadcrumbs
1/4 c (50 ml) milk
1 tsp (5 ml) salt
1/4 tsp (1 ml) pepper
Sauce
1 tbsp. (15 ml) vegetable oil
1 clove garlic finely chopped
1 tbsp. (15 ml) fresh ginger root chopped
2 c (500 ml) ketchup
1 c (250 ml) gingerale
pinch hot red chili flakes (optional)
3 tbsp. (45 ml) sugar
1 tbsp. (15 ml) soy sauce
1 c (250 ml) milk

Combine ground beef with garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, salt and pepper. Shape into 1" (2.5 cm) balls. Reserve. To prepare sauce, heat oil in large saucepan. Add garlic and ginger. Cook 1 to 2 min until fragrant but don't brown. Add ketchup, gingerale, hot chili flakes, sugar and soy sauce. Bring to a boil. Add milk. Heat thoroughly. Sauce may look separated. Bring sauce to a boil and add meatballs. Reduce heat. Cook gently, uncovered for 1 hr or until meatballs are tender and sauce is thick. Serve over rice.

For Sweet and Sour Chicken Wings, prepare sauce. Cut 2 lb (1 kg) chicken wings into sections and add to sauce. Cook gently 30 to 40 min until wings are thoroughly cooked and tender.

Make a double recipe of the sauce and freeze half to use on barbecued ribs, pork chops and chicken. Frozen sauce will keep for 3 months.
