Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 cup butter (Mama used Crisco)
2 cups sugar
3 cups flour (Mama used 2-2/3 cups cake flour)
4 eggs (Mama used 5 eggs)
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Directions:
Sift sugar. Beat Crisco until soft. Add the sugar gradually. Blend these ingredients until they are very light and creamy. Beat egg yolks in one at a time. Add vanilla.
Sift flour before measuring. Resift with baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add sifted ingredients to the batter mixture in about 3 parts alternately with thirds of milk. Beat the batter until it is smooth after each addition.
Whip until stiff, but not dry, 4 egg whites and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Fold them lightly into the batter.
Bake the cake in 8 x 12-inch pan lined with wax paper in a moderate 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes or in 3 greased 9 inch layer pans from 30 to 35 minutes. (Almost 1 hour at 350 degrees in tube pan).

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
(The old time 1,2,3,4 cake slightly modernized)
This was the recipe that Clyde used to make her famous coconut cake. Bake this cake and frost with Seven Minute Frosting. Sprinkle coconut (fresh) between layers and on top.
This is also the recipe that Mama used to make Daddy’s (P.J.) Birthday cake. Also she
used this for Phillip’s birthday cake with “bought” Duncan Hines Chocolate Frosting.
Chris and Kenny liked this cake, too. She usually made it for their birthday. Kenny liked
Seven Minute frosting.
