"The tradition of Italian cooking is that of the matriarch. This is the cooking of grandma. She didn't waste time thinking too much about the celery. She got the best celery she could and then she dealt with it."--Mario Batali

Directions:
Mix together butter & eggs; add sugar. Mix together spices, baking soda, & flour - add to first mixture. Fold in apples, dates & nuts.

Pour into greased 9 x 9 pan. Bank at 350º F for 40 minutes.

A little dusting of powder sugar goes well with this cake. Grandma and Mom would sometimes cut a paper doily and place over the cake & then sprinkle on the powder sugar.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Having a cousin with an apple orchard was a real plus in getting apples.
Between Lexington, Dover, to Waverly there were many orchards along Hwy 24, close to the Missouri River. I believe Mom helped with the apples one year & Joyce picked strawberries when in high school.
