1 lb. ground beef
2 small onions, chopped
1 cup saltine cracker crumbs (or bread crumbs)
2 eggs
3 Tablespoons cooking oil
2 cans tomato puree (or can use italian style stewed tomatoes)
Flour
Spices and herbs (see below)

Grind in mortar and pestle:
1-2 cloves garlic (can adjust to your taste)
1 teaspoon fennel
½ teaspoon oregano
½ teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
Juice of one lemon

Directions:
Directions:
Prepare herbs and spices by grinding in mortar and pestle with lemon juice.
Sauté onion in oil until brown and let cool. Save oil in fry pan.
Mix cooled onions, ground beef, cracker crumbs, eggs and spices in a large bowl.
Shape into 1" balls and roll in flour.
Brown meatballs on all sides.
Transfer meatballs to a glass pan, cover with tomato puree and season sauce with Italian seasoning. Add water to cover.
Bake at 325 degrees for about an hour. Can cook in crock pot instead for about 4 hours.
