1/2 c. butter (room temperature)
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 squares (2 oz.) unsweetened chocolate, melted & cooled
3/4 c. buttermilk or sour milk (make with sweet milk +1 tsp vinegar, let clabber)
1 tsp. vanilla + tsp. salt+1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup chopped nuts of choice
1 c. snipped dates and candied cherries

Preheat oven to 375. Mix butter, sugar, and egg. Add chocolate to mixing bowl & stir in buttermilk & vanilla. Sift together & stir into mixture flour, salt, soda. Stir in nuts, dates, cherries & chill dough. Drop by tsp. 2 " apart on non greased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes until light touch with finger leaves no print.

In 1986 Hilda Graf, mother of Charles Graf, gave us this German cookie recipe. John went to school with Charles. Hilda and Mutz (my mother-in-law) were cookie makers extraordinaire. I tagged along to get this recipe. Good memories with it!
