Stir in.................................. 3 tablespoons sugar, 6 tablespoons shortening,
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
Cool mixture to lukewarm
Measure into bowl.............. 1 cup warm (NOT HOT) water
Sprinkle or crumble in......... 1 package yeast
Stir until dissolved. Stir yeast mixture into luke warm milk mixture
Add...................................... 3 cups sifted flour
Beat until smooth
Stir in an additional 3 cups flour one cup at a time (more or less if mixture seems to wet or dry)
Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth and place in lightly oiled bowl. Turn it so dough is also lightly oiled. Cover (we always used a white dish towel) and let rise until double. Divide and place in baking pans. Let rise until double again
Bake at 350 º. For about 35 - 40 minutes or until golden brown.

You can rub butter on top on loaves, but I don't like it that way. Sometimes Mom would use some dough to make sones, yum! You can also use this for rolls. Just add 1 egg and increase sugar to 5 tablespoons.

A real treat for us was to get to cut a fresh hot loaf and put butter and sugar on it. Better than candy.
