1 cup raisins
1 cup water
3/4 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp. pure vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 cups oatmeal, sometimes called rolled oats
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Directions:

Simmer the first 2 ingredients together over low heat for 20 to 30 minutes. Drain the liquid into a measuring cup. Add water, if necessary, to make 1/2 cup liquid. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Cream the shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla together until well mixed. Stir in the raisin liquid. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, soda, cinnamon and the cloves. Mix well. Stir in the oats, nuts and the raisins. Drop by tsp. 2" apart of ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Remove to a rack and cool.
