Use small pickles large enough to split once. Put in salt water 3 days and drain. Put in salt water 3 more days. Drain and split once. Make a solution half vinegar and water enough to cover pickles and let come just to a boil. Then drain. To 7 lb. pickles use 3 lbs. sugar, add 1 qt. vinegar and 1 oz. pickling spices. Let come to a boil. Take off the stove and let stand 2 more days. To the 7 lb. of pickles add 1/4 tsp. alum to the solution of vinegar and spices to make pickles brittle.
