Sugar Cookies Recipe

Grandma Gertrude Thelen


1 cup butter flavored crisco shortening
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 tsp vinegar (add to milk to sour)
4 cups flour

Confectioners Sugar Frosting (see Cakes & Desserts section)
colored sugars and sprinkles for decorating

Beat shortening and sugars until creamy. Add eggs and combine well. Mix in salt, soda, cream of tartar, baking powder, and vanilla. Add 1/4 cup soured milk and 2 cups of flour and beat at low speed until combined. Add remaining milk and flour and mix until just combined. Do not over beat. Mix up dough the night before and refrigerate over night. Roll out dough 1/4" thick on floured surface and cut with cookie cutters. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes depending on size until golden brown. Frost with confectioners sugar frosting and decorated with colored sugars and sprinkles.
