Ingredients: Cakes: 1/2 cup butter 1 cup powdered sugar 4 egg yolks, beaten 1 cup sifted cake flour 1 tsp baking powder 3 T milk 1 tsp vanilla
Meringue & Topping: 1/2 to 3/4 c sugar 4 egg whites 1 c chopped walnuts
Filling: 1 egg yolk 2 T sugar 1 T corn starch 1 c sour cream 1 T butter 1 tsp vanilla

Directions:Cakes: Cream butter and sugar. Stir in egg yolks. Sift flour and baking powder together. Add alternately with milk and vanilla. Pour into two round 8 inch greased pans.
Meringue and Topping: Beat egg whites until stiff and gradually add sugar while still beating. Spread both layers of cake batter with this meringue. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Cool and fill with the following:
Filling: Beat egg yolks, add sugar, corn starch and sour cream. Cook in double boiler until it coats spoon. Add butter and vanilla. Cool before putting between layers.
This cake doesn't need frosting. Best when served the same day it is prepared. Serves 12 |

Notes: This recipe was made for Jim Wagner for his birthday by his mother every year before her passing. Jim's secretary passed the recipe to Jill Wagner (Jim's daughter-in-law) so that she could still make it for him after Nana's passing.
