6 T butter
5 large yellow onions
1 T sugar
2 cloves garlic
1/2 cup cooking sherry
7 cups reduced sodium beef broth
1 t salt
1/2 t dried thyme
1 bay leaf
1 cup Gruyere
8 slices French bread

Directions:
Directions:
1) over med-high heat, cook butter and onions until translucent (10 minutes), sprinkle in sugar and stir continuously until browned and add garlic
2) deglaze pan with sherry and pour all into slow cooker with broth and spices
3) cook on low 8-10 hours
4) pour soup into bowls and top with toasted bread and top with cheese, place under broiler until browned
