Large White Onions
Buttermilk
Salted Water
Tempura Batter
Oil for frying

Directions:

Slice onions in 1/2 -3/4 inch rings. Soak over night in salted water. Drain, dry and dip in butter milk. Dredge in Tempura batter. Fry in hot oil til golden brown

I talked with Mrs. Betty Jo Russell and Mrs. Laurel Hixson. They both said that the Tempura batter was what the BFA used but they bought in commercial 25lb. bags. The only differences I got between them was one said soak in salt water and dip in buttermilk the other said to soak in butter milk then dip. I have a vague memory of them soaking in large plastic garbage cans over night but I may have dreamed that too. So which ever sounds right to you that's the way I would cook them.
