2 1/4 c. cake flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. soft shortening
1 c. milk
1 tsp. flavoring
4 egg whites, unbeaten

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 350º. Grease and flour two layer pans, 8 or 9 X 1 1/2".
Measure flour by dip-level-pour method or by sifting. Blend flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add shortening, 2/3 cup of milk, and flavoring. Beat two minutes, medium speed on mixer. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl constantly. Add rest of milk and egg whites. Beat two more minutes, scraping bowl frequently. Pour into pans. Bake layers 30 to 35 minutes. Cool.
