Filling:
1 pkg dates (8-10 oz.)
1 cup + 1 tbsp. water
1/4 cup sugar

Crumbs:
1 3/4 c flour
1 1/2 c oatmeal
1 c brown sugar lightly packed
1/2 tsp baking soda
pinch salt
3/4 c hard butter

For filling:
Cut up dates and combine all filling ingredients in sauce pan and cook until thickened and saucy. Let cool slightly.

Combine all dry ingredients in large bowl and cut in butter with pastry blender or fingers. Spread and pat down a little more than half into a greased 9 x 13 pan. Dollop on the date mixture and spread evenly. Sprinkle the rest of the oat mixture on top and press down slightly. Bake in preheated 350º oven for 30 min.

This might also be great with a fig or apple filling.
