3 1/2 sticks butter, softened
3 c. brown sugar
6 eggs, beaten separately
5 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 pounds dates, chopped
1 1/3 pounds English walnuts, chopped
1 lemon, juice of
4 tsp. vanilla

Directions:

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks, which have been beaten, Add egg whites, which have been stiffly beaten. Sift together dry ingredients; add to batter. Next add chopped dates, nuts, and flavorings. Bake in 275º oven for 2 1/2 hours.

NOTE: This is a very dry cake. Several days before serving it, wrap it in a towel which has been soaked with grape juice or wine. Keep towel moist.
