1 cup shortening
3 eggs, beaten
2 cups brown sugar
4 cups flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
14 tsp salt

Filling:

8 oz pkg dates
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 cup walnuts, chopped

Directions:
Cook filling until it is a smooth paste, approximately 15 minutes. Add 1 tsp vanilla. Cool. Cream shortening with sugar. Blend in well beaten eggs. Sift dry ingredients together and add gradually to creamed mixture. Mix well. Chill. Divide into two parts. Roll out into a rectangular, 1/3 inch thick. Spread with filling and roll up tight. Wrap in waxed paper and chill overnight or for several hours. Cut roll into 1/4 inch slices and place on cookie sheet. Bake at 375º F for 10-15 minutes.
