1 (3-3 1/2 pound) chicken

Cover and cook until tender.
PASTRY:
2 cups plain sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
3/4 cups buttermilk (more if needed)

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, salt, baking powder & soda together. Cut in shortening. Gradually add the buttermilk to make a medium-stiff dough. Roll thin and cut into 1” wide strips.
Place cooked chicken in baking dish.
Mix 1-1/2 tablespoons flour with 1 cup sweet milk and 3 cups chicken broth (more if needed) and pour over chicken. Place strips of pastry on top. Dot with 1/4 pound (1 stick) butter. Bake at 450 degrees until golden brown and bubbly.

Can add vegetables such as peas, carrots, etc. if desired. Mama never did.
