Many ways to outdo prohibition when it took effect was being thought out. A local sufferer gives this recipe for making "old hen", a drink he claims to be almost as good as whiskey. It has a kick and enough of it, he says, will make a rabbit fight a coon. It is made this way: Take ½ bushel of meal chop, four gallons of water, four pounds of raisins or prunes, one cake of yeast and the juice of three lemons. Let the concoction stand in a warm place for three days, stirring once each day. Strain and then set for two more days, strain again and it is ready to drink. Anybody can make this drink, but as it is an "intoxicating liquor", the government will prosecute you for moon shining.
