Best to measure ingredients and set aside ready to use, especially the peanuts and vanilla flavoring.
Need heavy boiler and a candy thermometer; use wooden spoon to stir- helps keep the mixture from boiling over
2 cups sugar
1 cup karo
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup water
2 cups raw peanuts
1 tsp. vanilla flavoring
1 tsp. baking soda

In a heavy, large boiler (at least 6 quarts) on high to med heat, bring sugar, salt, karo and water to a boil to dissolve sugar. Add nuts and cook, stirring with wooden spoon to prevent sticking. Cook to 285º. Remove from heat, working quickly, add vanilla; stir to mix and then add baking soda- mixture will get foamy- like. Stir until it's well mixed; pour out on a large aluminum oven liner sprayed lightly with cooking spray. Work quickly, spread thin. Let set to harden.
