2 cups milk scalded but not boiled, cooled to luke warm
1 cup lukewarm water
Dissolve 2 Tbsp sugar in water, sprinkle 1 pkg. regular yeast over water. Don't stir, but leave for 10 minutes or until dissolved. Separately, beat 1 egg, 2 Tbsp melted butter or shortening, then add to milk. Add this mixture to water and stir.
Sift in 3 cups of flour with 1 tsp salt. Beat until smooth.
Add 3-4 cups flour. Knead on board 100 times. Allow to rise in a large greased bowl covered with a tea towel (doubles in volume, 1 hour).

Icing:
3 Tbsp butter
2-3 Tbsp milk
1-1½ cups icing sugar
pinch of salt

Follow instruction above, then:
Punch down and allow to rise again until doubled in volume.
Once high again, punch down and break into 4 balls. Press into rectangle (8"x4") and cut into 3 strips.
Leave ends uncut. Braid and put ends together so it fits on a cookie sheet. 2 braids per sheet.
Bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes. Ice when cool.

Icing:
Blend ingredients. Spread over cake once cool. Garnish on top of icing with strawberry jam.
